9月26日に公開したミックス音源「eyeshadow × Pinoy Grooves Covers Mix」のDJ、クリス・キャンベルにインタビューを行いました。Pinoy Groovesを主宰する彼が語る、フィリピン盤レアグルーヴの魅力について。ミックスを聴きながらどうぞ。

eyeshadow (以下E):　フィリピンにはこんなにたくさんのレアグルーヴのカヴァー曲があるのですね。

Chris (以下C):　はい、フィリピンは50年以上にわたってアメリカの植民地だったので、アメリカの影響を強く受けていました。特に、レアグルーヴ、ファンク、ジャズ、ソウル、ディスコ、レゲエなどの音楽に影響を受けています。

60年代から70年代にかけて、ベトナム戦争の影響でアメリカはフィリピンに巨大な軍事基地を持っていました。その基地の周辺には、バーやナイトクラブなどの巨大な街ができていました。そこで多くのバンドが結成され、アメリカの音楽を演奏したり録音したりしていたのです。

E:　中でもミュージカル・ユース「Pass The Dutchie」のカヴァーには驚きました。軽く調べてみたところ、このネイルクリッパーズというバンドは日本の横田基地で活動していて、1stアルバムも日本でリリースしていたようですね。

C:　ネイルクリッパーズは、フィリピン人のダイアン、デニス、ノエル、ウォーレン、ジョンの兄弟です。もともと日本を拠点に活動していた彼らは、当時人気のあったメヌードやトト＆ヒズ・チルドレンと同じように、10代のグループとしてスタートしました。1979年、彼らは《ヴィコール・ミュージック・コーポレーション》から「Heto Na Kami」、ABBAのヒット曲をカヴァーした「Dancing Queen」、シェリー・ギルの「Boy (I Love You)」の日本語バージョンを収録したデビューアルバムをリリースしています。

彼らの人気は、ローラ・ブラニガンの「Gloria」のタガログ語バージョンを収録したセカンドアルバム『Bahay-Bahayan』で急上昇しました。1981年には、ディナ・ボネヴィーとアルバート・マルティネスが出演したミュージカル / コメディ映画『Bakit Ba Ganyan』に出演しています。1985年に〈第8回 メトロポップ・ミュージック・フェスティバル〉で録音された「Pag-Ibig Sa Ating Musika」という曲が、彼らの最後のレコーディングになります。

E:　このミックス音源の中で、あなたの一番のお気に入りはどの曲ですか？

C:　ジェネラル・アグネス＆ヒズ・ファルコンズ「The Midnight Hour」ですね。ウィルソン・ピケットの名曲の素晴らしいカヴァーです。

ジェネラル・アグネスはオロンガポ市にある《ボニータ・クラブ》のマネージャーで、そこで演奏をしていたファルコンズは今は亡き偉大なミゲル・ヴァスケスがボーカルを担当していました。

E:　あなたは現在イギリスに住んでいるとのことですが、このミックスに入っているような曲はどうやって見つけるのですか？

C:　主にオンラインで、長年の間に関係を築いたところから入手しています。また、家族がレコードを買って持ってきてくれることもあります。

E:　今から私がフィリピンに行って、これらのレコードを見つけることは可能ですか？

C:　はい、まだ可能です。フィリピン全土には、マニラの《Treskul Records》やセブの《Pavement Records Cebu》のようなレコードショップがたくさんあります。

E:　もうフィリピン盤のレアグルーヴは集め切りましたか？

C:　どんなジャンルでもそうですが、常に発見があります。私は今でも新旧のPinoy Grooves（フィリピン産レアグルーヴ）を発見し続けています。

E:　あなたにとってのPinoy Groovesの魅力とはなんですか？

C:　私はあらゆる種類の音楽が好きですが、Pinoy Rare Groovesを掘り下げて研究することで、フィリピンの伝統をより身近に感じることができるのが魅力です。

E:　今後の予定を教えてください。

C:　近いうちにPinoy Groovesのいくつかをコンピレーションや7インチでリイシューしたいと思っています。

E:　このコロナ禍の間、あなたはどのようにして過ごしていましたか？

C:　Soho Radioで自分のラジオ番組を始め、《Ikigai Radio》《Don Papa Rum》《Kusina London》でライブストリームをいくつか行いました。また、自分のグッズも発売しました。

E:　もし世界中でコロナが収束したら、あなたは真っ先になにをしたいですか？

C:　フィリピンに行って、もっとPinoy Groovesをディグしたいですね。また、様々な国でDJをして、このPinoy Grooveを世界に発信していきたいです。

eyeshadow:　I didn’t know this, but there are many Rare Groove cover songs in the Philippines.

Chris:　Yes, the Philippines was a colony of America for 50 odd years and was heavily influenced by them, especially their music Rare Grooves, Funk, Jazz, Soul, Disco, Reggae and more. During the 60s and 70s the Americans had huge military bases in the Philippines because of the Vietnam war and around these bases huge towns sprung up including bars and nightclubs. It was at these places many bands formed and began performing and recording American music.

E:　I was especially surprised by the cover of “Pass The Dutchie”. I did some research and found out that this band, Nailclippers, is based out of Yokota Air Base in Japan and released their first album in Japan. Please tell me what you know about this band.

C:　The Nailclippers were Filipino siblings Dianne, Dennis, Noel, Warren and Jon. Originally based in Japan, they started off as a group of pre-teens in the same vain as other popular bands of the time Menudo and Toto & his Children. In 1979, they recorded their debut album for Vicor Music Corporation featuring the songs “Heto Na Kami”, “Dancing Queen” (cover of the ABBA hit song) and the Japanese version of Cherie Gil’s “Boy (I Love You)”. Their popularity soared when they recorded their second album “Bahay-Bahayan” which included the Tagalog version of Laura Branigan’s “Gloria”. In 1981, they were included in the musical/comedy film called “Bakit Ba Ganyan” which starred Dina Bonnevie and Albert Martinez. Their last recording together was their 1985 interpretation of the song “Pag-Ibig Sa Ating Musika” for the 8th Metropop Music Festival.

E:　Which song in this mix is your favorite?

C:　The Midnight Hour – Gener Agnes And His Falcons. Superb version of the Wilson Pickett classic. Gener Agnes was actually the manager of the Bonita club in Olongapo where the band played and the Falcons were actually lead by the late great Miguel Vasquez on vocals.

E:　You are currently living in the UK, how do you find records from the Philippines like the ones in this mix?

C:　Mainly online and also through contacts I have made over the years. Family members have also brought records back for me.

E:　Is it possible for me to go to the Philippines now and find these records?

C:　Yes it is still possible and there are now many record shops all over the Philippines like Treskul in Manila and Pavement records in Cebu.

E:　Have you collected all the rare grooves in the Philippines yet? Or is there more to come?

C:　It’s like any genre there is always more to discover. I am still discovering Pinoy Grooves old and new.

E:　What is the appeal of Pinoy rare grooves to you?

C:　Well I love all kinds of music but by digging and researching Pinoy Rare Grooves it helps me feel closer to my Filipino heritage.

E:　Please let me know the future plans of PINOY GROOVES.

C:　I hope to be reissuing some of these Pinoy Grooves very soon as a compilation and also on 7″.

E:　How did you spend your time in this COVID-19 pandemic?

C:　I started doing my own radio show on Soho Radio and did a few livestreams for Ikigai Radio, Don Papa Rum and Kusina London. I also released my own merch.

E:　What would be the first thing you would like to do if the COVID-19 pandemic were fully contained worldwide?

C:　Travel to the Philippines and dig for more Pinoy Grooves haha. Also DJ in different countries and share these Pinoy Grooves to the world.
